Women as the second sex: how history repeats itself

November 7th, 2008

UU Pornografi can be seen as a resurrected policy similar to that of Britain’s unjust Contagious Diseases Act 1864 which regulates women’s sexuality and behavior in both realms, especially in the public world.

Here is an excerpt of my research exam on the above law I mentioned that I did last year with my honorable Associate Professor Alison Bashford who specializes in the history of medicine and science:
…. The term sexual conduct was then expanded into broader meanings. What was considered as sin was then a crime. Illegitimate sexual conduct was counted as prostitution, and consequently being linked to venereal disease contagion. The jurisdiction between what is moral and immoral becomes ambiguous as the law tried to not only regulate social conduct but also dictating morality. Individual rights were stripped away from the community as people becoming more aware of the consequences of their behavior. Human social relations were limited to a certain extent that exploring relationships between two opposite sex can lead to imprisonment when not married or when it is illegitimately acted outside marriage. Careless stigma as such has restricted individual autonomy and freedom which causes the public too eventually ‘agreed’ with the concept of prostitution as a trade of services. This opened the pathways for women to enter the work force enabling them to earn income, and be financially independent to support themselves during the progressive era. Certainly, as the number of prostitution increases in the community, the subsequent equation also follows. As the next century unfolds, the relationship between prostitution and the spreading of venereal diseases was apparent thus lead to the bureaucratic management of the act to legal regulation.6

Due to the volatile situation, the British Parliament then decided to implement the controversial Contagious Diseases Acts (CD Acts) in 1864. This legislation was applied to certain military stations, garrison, and seaport towns, and it allowed law enforcement authorities to arrest any woman found within the compound whom suspected to be a prostitute.7 The arrest of these women is followed by compulsory medical examination which tested the presence of the disease. If one had suffered from any type of venereal disease mentioned above, then she was sent to a locked hospital for quarantine and remains there for a number of months for the appropriate medical treatment until pronounced cured from the disease. On the other part, if one refused to be subjected to medical examination or to be admitted in the locked hospital then she is threatened with imprisonment. This double standard of sexuality8 Acts was practiced in Britain, the United States, and Australia. Such medical examinations become compulsory for these women and the arrests based on suspicions only has triggered the feminist movement to ally together opposing the implementation of this Acts.

The management of venereal diseases then becomes political as it breached the notions of gender within a society. The fear of depopulation increased as the war took many casualties and the society needed to be regenerated. The presence of such venereal disease that affects fertility and reproduction rate was definitely not in the favor of the British parliament. The double standard of sexuality enforced by this CD Acts had certainly raised the sexual inequality questions amongst power elites. The responsibility was laid on women rather than men. The expansion of a network state and local public-health board approved the legal notion of ‘quarantine’ and it could be used to detain women without formal legal proceedings. By 1918, in the United States alone, 32 states had laws that permitted health departments to quarantine those suspected of venereal disease.9 Apart from acknowledging the rise of commercialized prostitution, the CD Acts was national policies which regulate sexuality from a rather biased perspective.10 Women were expected to conform to the established and ‘appropriate’ sexual conduct behavior. Debates were proposed that regulation of sexual behavior should be for both male and females. However, during the implementation of CD Acts (1865-1886) the physical and emotional burden was for the women to carry11 and this sexual inequality has initiated powerful and influential women along with their male sanitarian allies to group together on opposing this outrageous legislation.

The repeal of the CD Acts was a victory of the tremendous effort put by dedicated women (Mary Carpenter,12 Elizabeth Blackwell,13 Harriet Martineau,14 Josephine Butler, Mrs. Jacob Bright,15 Anne J. Clough, Florence Nightingale) with the help of the men (John Stuart Mill)16 who supported them. In 1869, two organizations were formed on the basis of opposing the legislation: The National Association for Repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts, and the Ladies’ National Association for Repeal of the Acts.17 Their persistent hard work with a combination of good publicity from the press18 and good organization brought about a change in public attitudes toward a law.19 The system that they originally thought to be essential to the public health proved to be false, immoral, and unjust. The abolishment of the CD Acts has revoked the women’s emancipation effort20 and evidently proved to the world that women’s constitutional rights are upheld as attitudes toward women were changing …

I would have written a long goddamn essay full of historical, theological, sociological, psychological and philosophical facts as a response towards the approval of this policy, i just don’t have the time right now. Maybe next week when I am free. Yep. I think I will do that. The least I could do for my country is to bitch about the morons who are running the goddamn government.

God Bless America (for growing up)

1. Big pat on McCain’s back for his effort and actually admitting that he lost before FOX news. Martin Luther King should be partying up in heaven. It took the country 35 years to realized his dream - not too shabby. You see, sometimes prophecy comes in the form of dreams and sometimes dreams do come true. So, never stop believing - never stop dreaming.

2. I had goosebumps seeing how Chicago was raided by Democrats supporters and showed up at Obama’s acceptance speech. IT WAS A LOT OF PEOPLE. Good pick on choosing Chicago though, Oprah was there sobbing… but who wouldn’t huh. Obama’s evangelical supporters glorified God’s name for the greatest gift of revolution the country could ever pull together. Goodbye white supremacist! My super genius econometrics business consultant friend has been freaking out in the past week knowing the possibility of Obama being president, he is skeptical to the fact that Jewish bankers will be ruled by an African American? Dude, chill - Obama’s got WARREN BUFFET and CLINTON and POWELL behind him and many more strategist and advisors…. if those three all together are not enough, then yes, we are all doomed.
3. It’s time for Americans to be proud being an American again. As long as they won’t go OVERBOARD with their pride otherwise the next thing you know would be another terror attack.
4. Makes me want to go back to the States to live again. Hopefully Obama will run 2 terms so I got 8 years to work on this plan.
5. Certainly, headlines on all network is definitely the coverage of this historical winning of Obama. SECOND to that on Channel ten this morning: Amrozi’s execution reports. Don’t know why but it made me laugh. Well, at least my country came second on the early morning headline news.

The thing about success is…

November 7th, 2008

… that not everyone handles success well.

People handle success differently. Some handles it well, stays humble and becomes a philanthropist or mentors - some forgets the true self, most likely to divorce the starter wife, goes wild or date girls of their daughter’s age. I love watching how successful men handles their success in different ways. It’s amazing how money, power, fame, success, ambitions, and greed easily destroys a kind hearted man. Not everyone handles success well.
But then again, which of the three is more important: success, wisdom, or happiness?

The Sweet Revenge

November 7th, 2008

I believe in karma, both the good and bad.

And I think karma is beautiful.
It’s literally the sweetest revenge and redemption without much effort needed as it happens by itself. Nature helps you re-gain your good and bad deeds.
But in order to receive the karma, we need patience. Because karma and time works together.
Karma helps everyone’s life to be fair.

Antara Ferrari dan Rok Mini

November 7th, 2008

“Hari gini ngajak cewe ngedate ngapain ya? Makan? Nonton? Jalan-jalan? Trus ngapain lagi? Gue udah keabisan ide nih….”

Wah kalo gue sih pengennya all day car ride kayaknya seru tuh, jalan-jalan ke coast highway gitu sebelah pantai…. makanya nih mesti cari laki yang ada mobil ye.
“Yahhhh bener banget tuh, semua pendekatan kayaknya lancar kalo ada mobil ye. Dulu jaman gue ada mobil kayaknya ngandangin cewe gampang bener. Kesana, kesini, semua gue jabanin. Tapi sekarang…. damn.”
Yoi, berat bok sekarang kalo mau ngajak cewe keluar modalnya mana bisa dengkul doang.. mending mobil doang, jaman sekarang tuh kalibernya time share private jet.
Loe ngiri aja kaliiii. Ngga punya Ferrari dan ngga punya cewe…. belom tentu yang nyetir Ferrari juga ganteng deh! Kimi sama Massa aja gak ganteng-ganteng amat, tapi secara pembalap jagoan gitu…
“Iya tapi kan ibaratnya kalo kandang loe bagus,
nilai loe tambah… tapi kesannya tuh cewe mau doang karna mobilnya Ferrari, murahan bener”
Yaaaa gila aja loe, ada kali cowo tajir yang punya Ferrari tapi ngga semua ceweknya murahan. Mobil pacar bagus mah hoki dan patut disyukuri, ngga apa-apa kale, daripada jalan kaki. Gini deh… loe liat aja tuh cewek pake bajunya kayak gimana, kalo udah naik Ferrari terus masih pake rok mini pamer paha… nah itu baru namanya murahan… hahaha
“Hahaha… Semakin pendek si rok mini, semakin murahan si doi?”
Minta dikobel? Maintenance? Takut diturunin di jalan kalo gak tebar selangkangan? Ga penting jek. Kalo m
au juga pake baju segaya mungkin yang ngga perlu tebar aurat atas bawah, naik Ferrarinya ke tempat tujuan, baru buka bajunya disana… Kalo gitu kan ngga ketauan murahannya hahahaha.
“Yahhhh mobil Ferrari, cewek sexy. Kapan ya?”
Udehhhh urusin dulu nasib visa loe. Percuma mikirin Ferrari kalo besok-besok loe di deportasi!

The Technological Society

Fuck me dead! I can’t believe my own eyes what I saw in the ‘Amazing Medical Stories’ TV program tonight. The world’s first bionic woman, I still couldn’t believe it and I sat back with my jaw dropped whilst realizing that all that happened back in 2006 - I am two years behind on this news. My fucking God, all that shit I have researched about robotics, transhumanism, and science are fucking happening alright. Reading about it can be one thing, but it’s sooooo different from watching a television report on it. And I can honestly say that apart from me being very impressed by the progress in the scientific world today (always have been fascinated with science and very passionate about it) but I’m also shit scared of what’s coming in the future.

This bionic lady lost her left arm due to a motorcycle accident, interestingly enough - she was an ex-marine. Now, scientific experiments are very close with the military world. Ideas as such are not suggested only from stories like X-Men but also in reality, genetic experiments really do start from Hitler and the gang, dude. Their proposed eugenics programs - creating a better human race by the selection of genes in favor of order within a society, has its peak post World War II. Gotta say, the medical world progressed so much after what the Nazi found out through torture in the concentration camps. They knew how to ‘destroy’ and ‘build’ human physically. Literally physically. Really, that’s quite a high achievement and I can’t believe myself I was impressed with their abnormal ideas. Scientists back then were geniuses, but scientists today are Gods.
I have declared that the scientific world is way too hot, no wonder atheism are growing stead fast.
Doctors planted sensors on her left chest, just above her heart, and program the prosthetic arm’s mini computer with combinations of nerve ends spots - those that are previously connected with her fingers. In short, they have re-wired her. What is MORE amazing: how she only needs to think of the action IN HER HEAD and the prosthetic arm will follow the thoughts by itself.
Now, that’s something. Of course previously, records of her MRI were consulted and made synchronized with the machine - which I think is the most impressive gig. The ability of her to just THINK of her action and then the hand will follow -  is to me at least, beyond imaginable. Whatever it is that she would like her hands to do, she would only need to picture it in her head and it will synchronized itself with her normal right hand. Her conscious minds can instruct machines by just sending a sensory image to the receptors end. Transhumanism? For the disabled - hell yeah, why not. But for the healthy and able? That is equal to a disaster in the making.
Now that’s just the doughnut. This is the icing: after a few months of excellent progress, suddenly the prosthetic arms able to SENSE touch, temperature, matter, and weight. The machine was perfectly humanized - and here I am left in shocked again. Wow. Scientists always impresses me but these robotics programmers and neuro experts are truly damn fine. Your parents should be very proud of you all because without all the ambitions, bionic lady is left with just an arm and again, life is unfair.
Bill Gates is investing a lot of money in robotics, focusing on the development of softwares. The robotics world is experiencing the same problem as what the PC did - and of course, Bill Gates is hoping that he’d eventually find the perfect commercial platform so he can pull another multi-billion dollars company on it again (because maybe he’s not rich or smart enough yet) and whoala, robots will be a part of our daily lives in no time and that’s when it all changes. Currently, the world have shared enough of its space with technology up to a current point that most of us are extremely dependent on it, to the least - there is never a day without the cell phone. Technology has become a part of us is quite acceptable to a certain extent but when technology is within us and makes us as an individual - sickkk. Watching ‘Heroes’ seems like watching our future.
How far are we pushing our limits on trying to be EVERYTHING within oneself? Have we gone too far on pushing our ability to help others? Because Newton said, there’s always a reaction to an equal opposite reaction.
May God Bless You, and whatever it is that you do - be in favor of love.
And yes. I will someday finish my BSc History and Philosophy of Science degree.
The scientific world and the fall of traditional religions. It is so happening.

Its magical

November 7th, 2008

lovers tonight, enemies the next day

nothing lasts forever, so they say
and it’s true, every bit of the words it lays
because we all need to save ourselves by the end of the day
and the hurt will just separate all of us away
but it’s okay, just pray
for that day until someone eventually come to stay

Makin ngawur aja…

What’s up with the pornography policy? Did it really got approved today?

Yup… Guess no more walking down the streets naked…

Man,… What on earth is happening to the country?

It’s turning into America… Prim and Pissy…

Am interested to know the changes they made on the draft… Detik.com said the policy doesn’t regulate individuals anymore tho…

I think it’s too difficult to implement like most of the bills in this country.. They can’t even prevent pedophilia!

And please deh itu Sutiyoso thinking of nominating himself as President… Ya ampun! Gemes bacanya..

The world is full of strange people… it is our misfortune to share space with them.

Yeah… and Mars is a complete waste of money too. Thank God for the Internet!!!!!

So true! At least on the Internet you can just delete them out…

And did Wulan Guritno really faked her certificate? Now that’s funny…

Like I said… A lot of weird people out there…

I bet you go to work everyday full of amusement… I admire your patience :)

I learn to see the funny side of things! And there are so many!

Hence you name your blog musings, haha… Me too. My sense of humour has developed tremendously since I went back to Uni. No wonder we are writers… It’s fun being a spectator of life huh.

Ya! An avocado a day keeps depression at bay :)
